HOUSTON – A coronavirus testing site is opening at the Midtown location of Houston Community College on Saturday. According to U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Houston), the site, located at 3000 Main St., will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will provide both drive-thru and walkup testing. No pre-registration is required. Dr. Cesar Maldonado, Chancellor, Houston Community College (KPRC)Houston Community College has 22 campuses and 97 thousand students but this Fall there will be none on campus when school starts August 24th. HCC Chancellor Dr. Cesar Maldonado says HCC will follow the direction of County Judge Hidalgo and will not have in-person classes until October at the earliest. Classes will start on August 24th using what HCC calls its Flex Campus which means starting all classes remotely but adjusting as conditions change. We can slide that scale, the number of students that go to class face to face while keeping the entire class together with remote learning at a specific time, said Dr. Maldonado. HOUSTON – The Houston Health Department and partners announced the schedule for sites offering free COVID-19 tests the week of July 20. HOUSTON KPRC 2 is giving students a clearer picture of the changes that are happening at local community colleges this semester amid the coronavirus pandemic. Lone Star CollegeLSC officials said they are moving forward with their plans to host students and faculty for the fall semester. When classes begin Aug. 25, about 25% will be face-to-face instruction and 50% will be online and 25% will be hybrid. Alvin Community CollegeAlvin Community College will also kick off its fall semester on Aug. 24. The reopening plans for the remaining local community colleges are still being hammered out.

HOUSTON – A new free COVID-19 testing site in the East End is opening up Monday at Houston Community College's Felix Fraga Campus. Houston has partnered with United Memorial Medical Center to open the site that Mayor Turner said will be used to specifically help the Hispanic communities in Houston. The site is also supposed to alleviate the testing demand at the HCC Southeast College. Since early March, more than 4,800 Hispanic people tested positive for COVID-19 in Houston, according to the Houston Health Department. Hispanic people make up more than 40% of those who tested positive, according to the Harris County Public Health Department.

HOUSTON Houston Community College is facing a $100 million lawsuit which alleges racial discrimination. The lawsuit alleges that, under the leadership of Chancellor Cesar Maldonado and the Human Resources director Janet May, Hispanics received preferential treatment. The suit also claims while 90% of tenured and experienced black employees have been displaced, only 10% of similarly tenured white employees have been displaced. The news release says the lawsuit also alleges Maldonado and May used a variety of tactics to get rid of black employees. In the lawsuit, she claims she reported that the grant funds had been misused or taken to the federal government.

HOUSTON Houston Community College is gearing up for the fall semester by implementing some changes to help keep students safe and comfortable as they head back to class. Online anytimeThese are the traditional online classes that are available regularly. HCC is working to add more lab-based courses since space is more limited than usual. When signing up for classes, students will now see online scheduled and flex campus courses instead of face-to-face or hybrid. Traditional online will be labeled as online anytime and labs will be labeled as lab-based courses.
