HOUSTON – Many local businesses and organizations have opened food and water distribution sites in the Houston area in the wake of the recent winter storms. Various distribution sites pop up daily, so please keep checking this list if you’re in need. Houston Community College-North Forest CampusTexas State Representative Senfronia Thompson, NACC Disaster Services, Teamsters Union, Houston Community College (HCC)- North Forest campus, HCC Trustee Rhonda Skillern-Jones, Peoples United Summit, and other volunteer groups host water and food distribution in northeast Houston. The organizers will provide food and water for about 1,000 vehicles. Pet owners will receive free pet food, supplies, and information on additional resources such as the Houston Humane Society’s free spay/neuter program.

HOUSTON – President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden had a busy day in Houston Friday afternoon. About an hour later, President Biden arrived, met Brian Greene with the CEO and President of the Houston Food Bank, and took a tour of the facility. “We’re not gonna see him again probably.”Earlier in the day, President Biden received an update on the recovery at the Harris County Office of Emergency Management. President Biden also used the visit to address the COVID-19 pandemic. President Biden and the first lady returned back to Washington, D.C. on Friday night.

“When a crisis hits our states, like the one that hit Texas, it’s not a Republican or Democrat that’s hurting," Biden said. With tens of thousands of Houston area residents without safe water, local officials told Biden that many are still struggling. AdThe president's first stop was the Harris County Emergency Operations Center for a briefing from acting FEMA Administrator Bob Fenton and state and local emergency management officials. Some state officials initially blamed the blackouts on renewable energy even though Texas relies heavily on oil and gas. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has sent emergency generators, bottled water, ready-to-eat meals and blankets.

HOUSTON – H-E-B is going above and beyond to make sure Texans have food on their table by donating $1 million to food banks across Texas. According to a news release, working directly with food banks affiliated with Feeding Texas, H-E-B’s donation will support 18 food banks throughout the state. So far, the Texas grocery chain has donated 23 truckloads of food and $100,000 in Meal Simple meals to food banks, per the release. H-E-B also responded to the ongoing water crisis in Texas by partnering with Zen Water and Florida-based Publix, who each donated 10 truckloads of water to Texas food banks this week. All donations will support Texas food banks with Feeding Texas.

HOUSTON – The impact of the Texas winter storm forced several school districts to remain closed at this time. The Houston Independent School District is included on the list. Millions of Texans are still recovering from last week’s winter storm. On Sunday, HISD held a massive food and water distribution site with the Houston Food Bank at NRG Stadium and served around 5,000 families. They will also be assisting our families in distributing food boxes in partnership with the Houston Food Bank.

HOUSTON – The Houston Food Bank is the newest, non-traditional voting location as the Harris County Clerk’s Office works to expand voting accessibility in what could be the highest turnout election in history. The food bank is partnering with the clerk’s office to become one of the 122 early voting centers in Harris County this year. In 2016, there were only 40 early voting centers. “We actually reached out to them and said we were interested in being a polling location, especially for this historic location," said Melanie Pang, director of advocacy at the Houston Food Bank. "We want to make sure that everybody has access to voting as much as possible.”There will be two ways to vote at the HFB location on Portwall Street -- in person and drive-thru.

LA PORTE, Texas – Wells Fargo is partnering with the Houston Food Bank to distribute meals to those who need them. The distribution will start Saturday at the Wells Fargo La Porte Branch on 1001 Highway 146 South. People can drive up to the branch between 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. to get food. “Wells Fargo has a long-standing commitment to help our local communities—especially during challenging times. HOUSTON The 2020-2021 school year has already begun for some and is just weeks away for others. Tax-free weekendStarting Friday through midnight Sunday, most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks under $10 will be tax-free. When Jim’s Supermarket burned down on Friday, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee said she knew it would hurt families here. She helped organize a food giveaway with the Houston Food Bank and is working to secure federal funding to help Jim’s rebuild. Residents told KPRC 2 the food giveaway will help them for a little bit because Jim’s is now gone. Karen Hunyh, whose family owns Jim’s Supermarket, was at the giveaway with other family members. Congresswoman Lee said to help, she is calling on food truck owners to come set up shop near Jim’s to help community members with food availability.

HOUSTON – The Houston Food Bank has rented an additional warehouse facility on the city’s northside. The new warehouse is expected to help alleviate the stress and demand on the main warehouse and dock area at the Food Bank’s I-10 and Gellhorn location, now referred to as the East Branch. The additional warehouse at 146 Knobcrest, which Houston Food Bank is referring to as North Branch, is a 128,000 square-foot facility that will handle all types of products (dry, refrigerated, frozen and items specific for disaster response). The Food Bank will primarily be operating mobile distributions and home deliveries from this location. Individuals and small group volunteers (up to 10 people) opportunities are available.

Houston Independent School District has resumed its curbside summer meals program. The district is providing free student meals at 12 locations, seven of which are operating in partnership with the Houston Food Bank. Families are able to pick up multiple days’ worth of student meals on Mondays and Thursdays through August 31. HOUSTON Most of the Houston Independent School Districts 42 summer curbside meal sites will be temporarily closing Friday due to the increase of coronavirus cases in the Houston area, according to the school district. Only five sites that work in partnership with the Houston Food Bank will remain open. All (sites) will then undergo deep cleaning and sanitization as a precautionary measure before re-opening on Monday, July 20, officials wrote. Five locations offering both Curbside Summer Meals and the Houston Food Banks Coronavirus Food Assistance Program, which provides families with 30-pound boxes of produce, will remain open, the district said. RICHMOND, Texas – The Houston Food Bank and Catholic Charities are collaborating to bring a superfood distribution site to Richmond capable of feeding 1,500 families. The partnership kicked off Tuesday morning at Catholic Charities’ Mamie George Community Center (MGCC), which will host large-scale food distribution to hundreds of area low-income residents who are struggling, even more, to keep food on the table during the COVID-19 pandemic. MGCC is located in the zip code with the greatest need according to Catholic Charities. Food distribution runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Families must register in advance through the Houston Food Bank’s system by texting 94502 with the letters HFBNSS as the message.

HOUSTON Cleverly Stone, the founder of Houston Restaurant Weeks passed away this year following her battle with cancer, but her last wish was that the charitable tradition continues in perpetuity in her name. The coronavirus pandemic hit people hard and the importance of the local restaurant industry and the Houston Food Bank were highlighted in a big way. Stone knew HRW would be vital to both in 2020, which is why she wanted the fundraiser to continue. HRW also partners with the Montgomery and Galveston county food banks and donations from participating restaurants in those counties will go to the respective food bank. According to the release, HRW will release the names and menus of the participating restaurants on the website in July.

HOUSTON – Six curbside summer meal sites and all Fresh Bus produce delivery stops have been canceled after a Houston ISD employee tested positive for COVID-19, according to the district. Houston ISD said the six summer meal sites that are closed Thursday include Bastian, Foster, Shearn, Thompson, Whidby and R. P. Harris elementary schools. All other scheduled summer meal sites will remain open, the district said. The district said health officials do not believe families participating in the curbside summer meals and Fresh Bus produce delivery programs were exposed. During the temporary closure, families in need are encouraged to visit one of HISD’s 65 other curbside summer meals sites scheduled to be open on Thursday.

HOUSTON – The Houston Food Bank provided 1 million pounds of food to families in need on Friday. The organization is working with 300 different charitable organizations to provide food and has seen it’s food distribution go up 250% since the coronavirus pandemic began. But, severe weather threw a wrench in those plans and families in need were left waiting to collect food. HOUSTON – I spent Monday morning volunteering at the Houston Food Bank. Even though I knew what the food bank does, I was shocked at the scale of the operation. The people at the Houston Food Bank, volunteers and employees alike, put out 1800 food boxes for children each day. The Houston Food Bank needs assistance -- both funding and time -- in order to succeed. I want to thank the Houston Food Bank for making my experience so enriching.

CYPRESS, Tx – Cy-Hope, who partnered with the Houston Food Bank in delivering hundreds of pounds of food to Houston-area residents at the Houston Premium Outlets parking lot had their final giveaway on Wednesday. The announcement was made in a tweet published by the Houston Food Bank. The food bank said you can still access the next closest pantry in your area by accessing their interactive map on their website. The nearest food pantry in Cypress is at the Cypress Assistance Ministries, located on 11255 Huffmeister. The only remaining Neighborhood Super Site distribution in the Houston area is at NRG near the Texans’ training bubble, in partnership with Houston ISD.

HOUSTON – Long lines of cars waited hours to receive food donations at NRG Park Saturday afternoon. Houston Food Bank and the Houston Independent School District organized the distribution site, feeding over 3,000 families, officials said. Officials closed the gate to the site once the organizers ran out of food, a few hours after opening the site to the public. “When you have to close out the line and say there is no more, your heart goes out because you wondering what’s going to happen," said HISD Superintendent Grenita Lathan. “We will re-open on Monday, but still, that’s two days away.”Those looking for help can visit houstonfoodbank.org/COVID19 or call the help hotline at 832-369-9390 to locate other food pantries.

CYPRESS – From across the Houston area, people showed up in droves to the Houston Premium Outlets in Cypress. Thousands in need received food donations at the Houston Super Neighborhood Distribution site, organized by the Houston Food Bank and Cy-Hope, a local nonprofit organization. Once a vehicle made it to the distribution site, the driver lined up, and the staff provided 25 pounds of produce, 35 pounds of protein, and other items such as beef stew and bread. "Fifty percent of children that attend Cypress ISD get free and reduced lunch," said Nicole Lander of the Houston Food Bank. The Cypress food distribution site is open every Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Organizers said the drive continues as long as there is demand, and the property owner, Simon Properties, allows them to use the space.

The Houston Independent School District, the Houston Food Bank, and Northwest Assistance Ministries are just some of the places where people can go to get food. The required Emergency Food Assistance Program forms will be filled out for each family and food will be placed directly in the vehicle’s trunk. HOUSTON – While much of the city of Houston is shut down, the Houston Food Bank will continue to operate with even greater demand, according to CEO Brian Greene. “Tuesday it was about 850,000 pounds.”The Houston Food Bank will be open through the stay home order in Houston and is taking donations. Marchetti is the co-founder of non-profit CrowdSource Rescue, a local non-profit disaster response team operating services through a website, to help save lives during hurricanes and natural disasters. Instead of rescue boats, Marchetti is focusing on organizing food deliveries from the Houston Food Bank. “[Marchetti] approached us to help us with a very significant need,” said Brian Greene, CEO and President of the Houston Food Bank. After just one day of calling for volunteers, Marchetti said 150 volunteers answered the call to be ready to deliver. Volunteers like Holly Hartman, a long-time helper of CrowdSource Rescue, said this is what makes this city strong.

HOUSTON – The Houston Food Bank is receiving a big donation from a Houston Rodeo vendor after the rodeo was canceled Wednesday. RCS Carnival Group announced Friday plans to donate items, including unused bread, produce, dairy and some meats. This donation will feed thousands of families through the Houston Food Bank that was intended to be sold at the rodeo carnival, said Dominic Palmieri, the owner of RCS Carnival Group. HOUSTON – The Houston Food Bank is asking for volunteers to help pack quarantine food kits. The non-profit is asking for help because they said the population they serve does not have reserves of food in the event of service disruptions/closures. The boxes are not yet being requested, but the food bank said they want to be ready in the event there is a need due to COVID-19 cases in the area. The food bank said they have increased the frequency of cleaning and disinfecting, especially around high-traffic areas (volunteer areas, elevators, meeting rooms, bathrooms, and food areas). Houston Food Bank plans to remain in operation while using the “best available safety protocols” throughout any coronavirus impact.

Even though the change, which takes effect April 1, is not expected to have a major impact on Houston or Harris County, the Houston Food Bank has some concerns about the new rules. In Houston and Harris County, where nearly 600,000 people are using food stamps, there isn’t expected to be an immediate impact. It’s all about battling perception, at least in the short run, according to the Houston Food Bank. The last time Harris County had to utilize that waiver was in 2012. H-E-B also announced Wednesday that the company would be pitching in the help replenish some of the food lost. HOUSTON – United Airlines on Wednesday came to the aid of the Houston Food Bank which was forced to throw out massive amounts of food last week after a cooler malfunctioned. Officials at the food bank said a fan in a 30,000-square-foot cooler broke and caused an ammonia leak. “So, when you think of a semi-truck, the big trucks that you see on the highway, on average about 20 pallets fit in each of those trucks.”Officials at United Airlines said the company would match up to $100,000 in individual donations to the food bank. United MileagePlus members who donate $50 or more will receive up to 1,000 award miles for their donation, officials said. “United values the Houston Food Bank as a strong community partner and we understand that they serve as an important lifeline to so many Houstonians, especially around the holidays,” said Rodney Cox, United’s vice president for Houston hub operations.

HOUSTON – Last week, a 30,000-square-foot cooler at the Houston Food Bank in east Houston was filled with much-needed produce and other perishables. It now sits empty after a mechanical issue caused the bank to toss the 1.8 million pounds of food that were kept inside. According to the Houston food bank, the cost of the food disposal and replacement and clean-up of the affected areas will cost about $3 million. An evaporator fan broke and punctured a pipe filled with ammonia, which is used to keep the large cooling areas at the food bank cold.
